New Year, Same Me Only Better

It’s time for me to reintroduce myself, as it’s been a while and I don’t feel that any of my previous introductions really captured what was needed about myself and Express Yourself Photography. I started my professional photography journey in 2012; though I had done a lot before then in different programs as well as helping other photographers in their sessions and studios. In 2012 I decided it was the time for me to start my own journey. I will be honest I don’t really remember how I found boudoir photography but that is where I started; I started as a boudoir and pinup photographer from the beginning. It did not take me long to pick the name “Express Yourself Photography” because even then, when it was still taboo, I felt that boudoir was one of the best ways for a person to express themselves as they are and how they want.

Throughout the years I have tried to offer other photography services like families and children’s portraits, I have even tried my hand at pets and events. None of this really felt like what I wanted for my business. Group sessions like families, corporate parties, or club groups really felt like people weren’t expressing themselves. They were expressing who or what they were a part of but none of that captured the individual person. So I niched back and stopped offering families, groups over four people, and children. Why not capture the children though? They do nothing but express themselves, and you are correct. However, when boudoir is my passion it’s hard for me to keep children and boudoir on the same platform and to be honest, even though I have children of my own I don’t have the patience for posing children like I do adults. I get frustrated at my own daughter’s photos and I’m not even the one taking them! So yes, I also stopped offering children’s photos. However, this past year I’ve done a lot of reflecting on my business and how I am providing images that are true to the name.

Allowing others to express themselves is what I want to provide and what I want to offer to others as an experience that they are willing to invest in. So with this new year comes opportunities for myself and my clients. I am continuing to offer boudoir and pinup sessions, but I am adding new session options. I am adding branding, this can be professional branding or personal branding. Professional branding includes headshots as well as images of you with your tools of trade and images of you in your place of work; whether it’s working on clients or building cabinets in your wood shop. I am happy to capture who you are as a professional. Personal branding includes individualized headshots as well as images of you and your hobbies. I can capture you with your favorite items that bring you comfort and joy. Bring your paintbrushes and easel, let me capture you painting a new piece of art. Bring your books, your vinyl albums, your resin tools, whatever it is that you like to do I can capture you doing that and the joy that it brings you. I am excited to offer these services to the community and people around me. On top of branding sessions I also will be offering product photography. If you are someone who creates a product and needs product listings to sell for online platforms such as Etsy, Squarespace, or Facebook Marketplace then I am happy to offer a session for your products.

Another new service I am bringing, or rather reintroducing is weddings. I will be offering weddings again with Sherry from Keepsake Images Studio by my side. Together we are offering different packages ranging from everything between engagements to the reception or as small as intimate ceremony coverage. For full day wedding coverage we will have both of us covering the wedding and reception capturing your important moments as well as the candid photos, for smaller more intimate ceremonies there will be just one of us needed. We are so excited to be working together to bring back our wedding services.

This brings me to my final addition. I will once again be photographing events and parties. I will be offering these services as organic services only. I will be taking detail photos and capturing moments at your event. I will not be offering posed group photos at these events. They are simply an investment on your memories because if you’re like me I am usually too busy enjoying my time with those around me to remember to take out my phone and capture the memories. I usually go home with a bunch of photos of my children and that’s it, I don’t get to remember who was there or what we did. So this is a service for those who wish they just had more photos from events and people around them. This service could include a backdrop set up for selfies if that is something you desire.

Something about me that can sometimes make things confusing is that I don’t mince my words. I say them straight and to the point. I don’t add fluff, I don’t add fillers. I like to just say it as it comes to my mind. Sometimes that makes me sound a little rough around the edges, but try not to hold that against me. I let my work speak for me more than my words.

As I mentioned above I am a mother as well, I have two children. I have a 4 year old daughter and a 5 month old baby boy. I am the primary caretaker of my children, as my husband works a full time job providing the main income for our family. Currently my baby is joining me on sessions as I am his source of food; I try to be very up front with clients about my children and that I do schedule sessions around them and my husbands schedule so that I can give you the best experience possible. However, my children do come first and if I am unable to find safe child care for them then I may have to reschedule sessions. This is just how my life goes. I love being a mother and a business owner but it definitely brings some of it’s own challenges. I love that my daughter sees what I do and learns the same body positivity that my clients are learning. That is really important to me. I bring the same lessons to my daughter that I bring to my clients.

Love yourself, love your body, take care of the things that are important to you, and don’t hang on to things that bring you down. Express yourself, be your own person, and don’t let anybody take that away.
